The problem of particle transport emerges for example in photoacoustic imaging or in criticality problems in nuclear reactors. This type of transport is governed by the so-called radiative transport equation (RTE). We present and compare several numerical methods for its solution, including the diffusion approximation or the Monte Carlo method. The mesh-based Monte Carlo method is studied more closely and the potential for its convergence analysis is explored.
